Volunteer and Community based Initiatives

Habitat Brisbane - Community Bushcare

This bushcare program is Brisbane City Council's volunteer program for community members. There are now over 160 groups established in Brisbane dedicated to conserving, protecting and enhancing the local environment. These groups work towards improving the biodiversity in bushland areas, waterways, parks and wetlands in Brisbane.

Volunteering for Parks supports the work of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) and allows individuals to participate in range of community partnership programs.

Bellbird Park Preservation Group

Located in Ipswich, Bellbird Park Preservation Group consists of a group of active community members who want to conserve and protect the local habitat. The aim of this group is to reduce and development and empower the community to improve the local environment for future generations.

Bulimba Creek Catchment

The community based program is delivered through schools and education projects, helping other bushcare groups when required and providing community members with the opportunity to participate in habitat improvement activities such as working on waterways, weeding and tree planting.

For individuals interested in more hands on learning when it comes to conservation, QWSG provides people with the opportunity to learn more about waders and help in the collection and analysis of data. This group is dedicated to monitoring and conserving these unique birds.

This group specialises in bird surveys focusing specifically on threatened habitats and species in key biodiversity hotspot areas. They are now beginning to focus on conservation issues affecting birds in local habitats.
